The Institute's Mission is to prevent death and suffering from heart disease through an understanding of the biological processes that cause atherosclerosis.

The Heart Research Institute Ltd (HRI) was established in 1989 through a joint initiative of the National Heart Foundation of Australia, the Cardiologists of Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and the New South Wales and Federal governments. As an independent world-class research institute, HRI is a centre for scientific excellence with a focus on researching and understanding the origins and mechanisms of atherosclerosis.
