The Doheny Eye Institute began in two small rooms at St. Vincent Hospital in 1947. Today, the Institute is an independent, non-profit organization affiliated with the University of Southern California, and has emerged as a world leader in basic and clinical vision research and advanced patient care. The Doheny Retina Institute was established to emphasize clinical research and to speed the process of moving research findings to clinical care. The Retina Institute team has a record of success with the innovative "retina chip" designed to restore sight to patients with blinding retinal disorders. Doheny is proud to be among the top 3 recipients of vision research funding from the National Eye Institute, National Institutes of Health. Doheny maintains its Top 10 status as one of America's Best Hospitals.
